The success story of Mercedes W123 continued when the upper middle class sedan was updated in 1984-1985. In connection with the new W124 generation, Mercedes also changed the model name used for customers, and for the first time officially presented the E-series. Many legendary Mercedes innovations such as a single windshield wiper or manhole cover -wheels were introduced with the W124 series. The handling was familiar from Mercedes, whose cornerstone was the independent suspension built with gas shock absorbers and coil springs, with rear level adjustment in estate models and as an option for other model versions.
The open-top model of the E-series was presented in the fall of 1991 and production began in 1992. The basic idea of the body was borrowed from the coupé presented a couple of years earlier. The A-pillars of the open model were reinforced and dampers were added to the roof structures, trunk and chassis. This was done to reduce body vibrations typical for open-top cars and body slack felt when driving. Special attention was also paid to safety, for example with an automatic roll over curve that rises behind the rear passengers in the event of a crash.
The W124 cabriolet was introduced as the 300 Ce 24 model. In 1993, Mercedes experienced facelifts with the new front look of the S-series, and so did the open model E-series. At the same time, four-cylinder engines were introduced in connection with the open model, of which the E200 version was offered in Italy, Portugal and Greece.
This E200 Cabriolet in question, registered first time in September 1995, has been sold as new in Italy. From Italy, the car has traveled to Belgium, where a Finnish Mercedes enthusiast from Lahti bought it in 2015. In 2017, the enthusiast sold the car to the current owner, I. Lindroos.
The car has been serviced regularly and the car works very precisely. Typical defects, such as the slave cylinder of the clutch and the water valves of the heating device, have been renewed by the current owner.
The car’s Azure Blue paint finish is clean and attractive, and the cream-colored leather upholstery is intact. The blue cloth roof works flawlessly. The car also has air conditioning, the cell of which would need to be renewed to work.
The car’s engine and transmission work flawlessly and the car gives a luxurious ride. As Autocar wrote about the W124 series at the time, “It is perhaps the most prestigious model version of perhaps the most prestigious production car that Mercedes has ever produced. The W124 series represents guaranteed build quality and timeless design, and that makes the car historically significant.”
The Mercedes has been inspected in August 2022 and will be sold with fresh service.
The car is located in Vantaa, views by appointment.
