Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons’ swan song was not modest. Princess Alexandra opened the London Motor Show at Earl’s Court on 16 October 1968. The show’s main novelty was a luxury saloon, which had been in the planning for four years, and for which Sir William Lyons had set an uncompromising goal: “We will develop a luxury saloon that will set a new, unprecedented standard in terms of comfort, luxury, driveability, steering, performance, braking and safety – With the quality and excellence that everyone have come to expect from Jaguar.”
The car was the Jaguar XJ6 – Experimental Jaguar, with six cylinders. The car was a sensation, beautiful and praised for its features. During the development work in 1966, Jaguar joined the British Motor Company and Lyons remained as a consultant to Jaguar. This swan song was worthy of Jaguar’s founder and main designer, Sir Lyons, to retire.
It is difficult to get any closer to the moment when the Jaguar XJ6 first rolled out of the Coventry factory onto the tarmac. This car for sale is exceptional – the current owner bought it new and has driven it only 16,900 kilometres since September 1970. The car’s historical documentation is flawless.
Finnish V.Mäkelä purchased the Jaguar as new from the Bergengres – Jaguar dealer in Stockholm on 16.09.1970. Young Mäkelä fulfilled her father’s dream of own Jaguar – the Sable Brown colour and Barley Beige leather interior were chosen together. The father had time to enjoy the Jaguar with his daughter for a while. During its first years, the Jaguar traveled with V.Mäkelä’s work in Sweden, until it was imported and registered to Finland in the spring of 1981.
The car’s first maintenance was carried out in Sweden by Scan Auto. Since 1981, the car has been maintained by Karaasi. Every maintenance receipt is preserved. In addition to the owner V.Mäkelä, only Karaasi’s trusted mechanics who maintained it have been allowed to drive the car.
Every document related to the car over the years is preserved: The car’s original purchase receipt, the first service records from Sweden and the service records from the time in Finland. The car has been regularly maintained despite the very low mileage. In recent years, the brakes and fuel system have been refurbished, among other things.
Even the very original wiper blades are also preserved in the car’s trunk. The very original tires with rims are also preserved. To enable safe driving of the car, the car now has new tires with similar wheels as original ones.
The car’s Sable Brown paintwork is in excellent original condition – only the bonnet has been renewed and painted when V.Mäkelä drove in the back of the another car in front while leaving the traffic lights in the summer of 2016.
The original Connolly leather upholstery in Barley Beige is also in excellent condition. The headliner is original and impeccable. The gauges are the car’s original, untouched. The Becker Monza radio was installed by Karaasi in the car in April 1984.
The car is registered as a historic vehicle and inspected on September 1, 2025. The inspection is valid until September 2029.
