Towards the end of the 1950s, Volkswagen had a small family car in its collection, the Typ 1 Beetle, which had become a “ The People’s car”, Typ 2 vans and pick-up trucks, and the newly introduced coupé, Typ 14 Karmann-Ghia. A more spacious family car was missing, and the Typ 3 was designed to fill the gap. It was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1961.

The Typ 3 was initially introduced under the Volkswagen 1500 model name, after the cubic capacity of the car’s engine. The technology of the car was once again familiar from Beetle, with an air-cooled engine placed at the back and rear-wheel drive. Compared to the Typ 1, the car was about 15 centimeters longer and offered better space for both passengers and luggage. The front suspension built with transverse torsion bars also made the ride more comfortable and civilized. The car was initially presented in two body styles, a three-door Notchback, and a three-door Variant. In 1966, the VW 1600 TL Fastback, a hatchback with a 1580 cubic meter engine, came available.

This 1969 1600 TL Fastback in question is equipped with IRS rear suspension and disc brakes, and the car was sold new in Finland. However, the car remained standing in the 1980s in Somero, where it had been the car of a gentleman who worked as a machinist. VW enthusiast A.Erämaa bought the car in 2018, and the car was restored to traffic after 35 years of non-use.

The car’s engine and brakes were restored in 2018. The car’s engine is 1641 cubic meters and has a mild tuning camshaft. The car has electric ignition and the carburettors have been renovated in connection with the engine renovation. The car’s engine and transmission work perfectly. The engine twists nicely and pulls cheerfully.

The body of the car was thoroughly renovated and the body parts in poor condition, such as the one of the door and fender, were renewed. The VW was repainted in the original shade of red. The body has been finished by renewing the windshield, gaskets and body moldings.

The upholstery of the seats in the light interior has been renewed with light vinyl upholstery. The door and roof trim are still original to the car.

A fine specimen ready to be enjoyed.

The car is registered as a historic vehicle and the Mot/Tüv inspection is valid until 05/2024.
